Charleston, SC sits on a penisula of land called Oyster Point that is snuggled between the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. The rivers are named after a friend of King Charles II, the Lord Proprietor Anthony Ashley-Cooper. The rice plantations were up and down the Ashley side, and the US Naval Base had the Cooper side for many years.
