Originally they were looking for another way to get to Asia but when they discovered there was another continent and after they figured out it wasn't Asia(which didn't take long, Christopher Columbus just wasn't that bright) they continued coming for the resources, more power for their country, and hopes of gold. Other Europeans came after colonies were established in hopes of a new life and/or religious freedom
