There are three plasma layers around the earth, each known as a Van Allen radiation belt. The centre of these layers is 300 miles north of the Earth's own centre, and this leads to the innermost Van Allen radiation belt being nearer to our planet than any of the others. At its nearest point it is only 124 miles above the South Atlantic Ocean. This leads in turn to satellites being affected by the concentrated radiation from this area, and the Earth's own magnetic field is less strong at this point than if all things were equal.
