The Sahel is not a desert. It is is the strip of land of semi-arid grasslands, savannas, steppes, and thorn shrublands lying between the Sahara desert in the North and the wooded Sudanian savannas in the south. It stretches across the north of the African continent between the Atlantic Ocean and the Red Sea. The Sahel covers parts of the countries of Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Chad, Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia, Algeria and Eritrea.
