Damodar Valley Project is the first multipurpose river valley project of independent India began on July 7,1948.It was gradually completed as follows: 1. the first dam on Barkar River, a tributary of Damodar River completed in 1953 at Tilaiya. 2. The second dam on Konar River, a tributary of damodar River completed on 1955 at Konar. 3. A dam at Maithan completed on 1957 and other at Panchet completed on 1959.
