Tower Bridge opened in 1894 and is the only bridge in London which is able to open and allow tall ships to pass underneath. Although there is no longer commercial traffic using that part of the River Thames, Tower Bridge still opens several times every week to allow large yachts and other craft to pass underneath.
Tower Bridge was completed in 1894 and was designed to open so that taller ships could get into the Pool of London which was a busy area of the river Thames at that time. When the bridge was built, there were no other bridges between it and the open sea.
Tower Bridge is open to traffic but has a 20 mph speed limit and an 18 tonne weight limit.
