The numbers vary, as with all things. 210 people have died climbing the mountain since 1922 (the first expedition to the mountain), a mean of 2.3864 deaths per year. Some years have seen no deaths occur, mostly in the early decades of Mt. Everest climbings, and some have seen disaster years of up to 15 people (in 1996; 8 were killed from the same expedition).
At least 210 people have died climbing Mount Everest since it was first climbed in 1953. The number per year varies widely, but averaging the 210 deaths over the 56 years from 1953 to 2009 would give an answer of 3.75 per year. Some years were disastrous; in 1996, 15 people died trying to come down from the summit, 8 on the same day. The bodies of perhaps 150 of those unfortunate climbers remain on the mountain where they died.
