It is called the United Arab Emirates, as it is a union of seven previously autonomous tribal areas that were ruled by patriarchal Emir's. In 1971, they joined together to form one united country, the United Arab Emirates. Emirates (Airlines), is also the name of the airline that operates out of and services Dubai, which is one of the seven emirates which forms the UAE. The national carrier of the UAE is Etiyad Airlines. Emirates Airlines sponsor many international sports events and teams, so their logo and branding is often seen on television and at sporting events.
