There have been fortifications on the site for over 2000 years. The present buildings as they appear now were started in the 11th century by William, Duke of Normandy. The Tower still has a very small military garrison to guard the British Crown Jewels which are housed in the Jewel Tower. The Tower is one of London's best known visitor attractions with a large display of antique militaria. It is still officially a Royal Residence although not used as such.
