At times, particularly during floods, a river may form a meander cutoff, a new, shorter channel across the narrow neck od a meander. The old meander may be abandoned as sediment separates out from the new, shorter channel. The cutoff meander becomes a cresent-shaped ox-bow lake. With time, an ox-bow lake may be filled with sediment and vegitation.

A meander in a river follows a winding course through a valley. An oxbow is a small curved lake lying on the flood plain of a river constituting the remnant of a former meander. The similarity is historical.

Oxbow Lake Formation An Oxbow Lake is a development of a meander, thanks to erosion and deposition. The neck/bend of the meander grows narrower and narrower and eventually the river just takes a shortcut of straight on ahead instead of going around the neck/bend. Soon the loop of the meander is sealed off altogether and it turns into an oxbow lake.In time the lake will get covered with weeds, fill with soil and will disappear. If you doing this for work/school I suggest you use diagrams/pictures to show each stage.
