The alligator is the main predator for the Everglades and if they were taken out of the swamps all of there prey would over populate and eventually the lack of food due to over population would distort the habitat.

The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is the species of alligator found in the Everglades. They are primarily freshwater inhabitants and play a crucial role in maintaining the ecosystem balance of the Everglades.
They are not rare anymore, though they were at one point endangered. There are estimated to be up to 2 million in Louisiana alone. The Everglades are one major habitat for these alligators.
The Everglades National Park in Florida is known for its population of both alligators and crocodiles. It is one of the few places in the world where both species coexist in their natural habitat.
