Why is what called "Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo Jump?" You mean the actual cliff itself that is a World Heritage Site in Alberta? Well, it's because when the Blackfoot Indians drove buffalo off the cliff, the cliff was so tall that the buffaloes' heads would get literally smashed-in when they hit the bottom.

The Blackfoot Indians that lived in the area at the time used this tall cliff to drive a large herd of buffalo (now properly referred to as bison) off of it to get more meat (and other things) to pack back to their camp. It is a cliff that is so tall that the bisons' heads get smashed in when they land at the bottom, hence the name. Head-Smashed-In-Buffalo Jump is a UNESCO World Heritage Site located outside of Fort Macloed in southern Alberta, Canada.
