The river Mersey froze in 1895, after the temperature had not risen above freezing for over 3 months, with floating Icebergs being seen in the early stages, which then joined together and formed an ice coverage from Liverpool to the Wirrall thick enough to take human weight, I believe there is a photo out there somewhere of a horse and cart making its way over. It also froze in 1962/63, though I haven't seen any photos of this, and I don't believe it was full coverage, more shoreline ice flows.
