The South Platte also heads northeast from its source but never ventures into Wyoming. They are important American waterways but lack the prestige of the Missouri or Colorado, and were never navigable by anything but a light canoe. At some places it can be "a mile wide and an inch deep", clogged with debris and sandbars.
