It seems like with all of the new communication devices out there, that old pager lying around at the house can’t be useful for much anymore. However, it isn’t OK to just throw the pager away with yesterday’s tuna casserole. Because of the chemicals used to make pagers and devices like it, they must be properly disposed of in order to cause the least harm to the environment. Here are a few ways to safely rid of that old technology:
1) Contact a Local Recycling Company: Every town has at least one major recycling hub that can handle all types of hazardous materials. From batteries to medical waste, there are many products that can be used again and made into something new if they are given to the correct source. Find the number for the local recycling center in the yellow pages to see if they accept old electronics or know of somewhere that does.
2) Go to The Local Wireless Phone Store: Many wireless phone carriers have teamed up with national recycling campaigns to get old phones and pagers to be used for new purposes. Chances are the local store branch has a box where anyone can put their old devices in and ensure that they will be disposed of properly.
3) Use the services of Recyclemycellphone.org: Recyclemycellphone.org is a fantastic website offering FREE recycling services to anyone that can print out the pre-paid postage and mail their old device in. They have teamed up with a number of global partners to ensure that these toxic devices do not end up in landfills or regular trash facilities. They don’t even have a dumpster at their offices because they are so committed to their recycling project!
4) Find a New Use: Just because the pager is not useful for its intended purpose does not mean that all hope is gone. Find a new use for the pager such as a child’s play-toy, a lesson about old technology or even in a unique art project.
So if that old pager is just sitting around, use one of these tips to find a new use for it that’s good for the planet!
