The three different types of galaxies are the Spiral galaxy, the Elliptical galaxy, and the Irregular galaxy. Spiral galaxies are obviously in the shape of a spiral, elliptical galaxies are shaped as an ellipse, or a flat circle, and irregular galaxies can be any shape.
Elliptical galaxies tend to be reddish in color because they are made up of older stars that emit more red light. These galaxies have used up most of their gas and dust, resulting in a lack of ongoing star formation. This makes their overall color appear reddish compared to younger, bluer galaxies.
Irregular galaxies do not have a distinct shape or symmetry like spiral or elliptical galaxies. They often appear more chaotic and disordered, lacking the structured appearance of other galaxy types. Irregular galaxies can vary greatly in size and are characterized by a less defined structure.
The most common type of galaxy in the universe is elliptical galaxies. These galaxies are characterized by their elliptical shape and contain mostly older stars and very little interstellar gas and dust. Elliptical galaxies are commonly found in galaxy clusters.
Actually, it doesn't matter what kind of galaxy it is, because it depends on what kind of stars are in it. If a galaxy has a lot of red giants, it will appear redder than a galaxy with mostly blue-white stars. Older galaxies might be redder than younger galaxies due to the fact that older stars appear redder.
Elliptical galaxies typically contain older, low-mass stars that are redder in color. These stars have lower levels of ongoing star formation compared to spiral galaxies. Elliptical galaxies also tend to have a larger population of low-luminosity stars, such as red dwarfs.
Elliptical galaxies are round or oval in shape and contain older stars with little ongoing star formation. Spiral galaxies have a central bulge with spiral arms and ongoing star formation. Lastly, irregular galaxies lack a distinct shape and can have a mix of young and old stars with ongoing star formation.
Galaxies have different shapes because of what happens throughout their lives. Any galaxy, at one point or another, will encounter another or many galaxies. When encounters occur, gravity takes over. The larger of the two galaxies will consume the smaller one, this is called galactic cannibalism. The act of absorbing another galaxy will change the size of the galaxy it's shape and even the speed of its rotation. Our own galaxy, The Milky Way, is as large it is (100000-150000 Light years across.) because of galactic cannibalism. The Milky Way is as we speak consuming two other small galaxy. And in about 2 billion years, our nearest nieghbor, the Andromeda Galaxy, will collide with our galaxy. Both the Milky Way and Adromeda galaxy are spiral galaxies, but after they collide the resulting new galaxy will an elliptical galaxy, which looks like a bright white sphere.
The 4 types of galaxies are spiral, barred spiral,elliptical and irregular. 1. Spiral galaxy is easiest to identify due to its spiral structure and has its dust and gas scattered out evenly. Two good examples are the Milky Way Galaxy and Andromeda Galaxy. 2. Barred Spiral looks somewhat like a spiral galaxy, but in the first stages. Rather than having the same look as the spiral galaxy, the gas and dust in a barred galaxy are compressed near the center, with unevenness of the gas and dust, even though it still forms somewhat of a spiral. 3. Elliptical Galaxies are one of the largest galaxies with billions of solar systems clustered to appear as one star. With dust and gas scattered throughout, these galaxies appear to be a round shape and tend to hardly contain interstellar matter. 4. Irregular galaxy is also easy to identify because it is poorly structured and are even sometimes called dwarf irregular galaxies.

Although the Andromeda Galaxy is a bit larger than the Milky Way, and is large as spiral galaxies go, it is not the largest galaxy. There are larger spiral galaxies, and much, MUCH larger elliptical galaxies. However, because it is relatively close to the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy _appears_ quite large, spanning an apparent width roughly six times that of a full Moon. Still, there are two smaller, closer galaxies (the Magellanic Clouds) which appear larger still. (The Magellanic Clouds are not visible from northern latitudes, however, so one could argue that the Andromeda Galaxy is the biggest galaxy in _apparent size_ visible from most of the northern hemisphere.)
