Alknomook (proper spelling) was not a real person. He is referred to in a song called "Death Song of the Cherokee Indian" or "Death Song of Alknomook" which was written for a play called "The Contrast" by Royall Tyler and first performed in 1787. It was one of the first plays written and produced in the United States. The song also appeared in a collection of poems by Anne Hunter published in 1806 so it is sometimes attributed to her but there is no actual evidence that she wrote it before Mr. Tyler. The name was probably made up by Tyler and thus has no meaning in Cherokee. The play is not about Indians. A character in the play sings the song to express her feelings about her upcoming arranged marriage.

The poem and song were published in London in 1780 BEFORE Tyler's publcation so it is more likely he copied Hunter. You can see for yourself by searching the term 'The Death Song of the Cherokee Indians' which will show you a publication by Preston!
