In 1889, the first public coin telephone was installed by inventor William Gray at a bank in Hartford, Connecticutt. It was a "postpay" machine (coins were deposited after the call was placed). Gray's previous claim to fame was inventing the inflatable chest protector for Baseball.
The first house phone was invented on 10 March 1876, Scottish-born inventor, Alexander Graham Bell uttered the famous words into the telephone to his assistant in the next room: "Mr. Watson, come here, I want to see you".
