This is actually really complicated. The short answer is that New York City has six area codes: 212, 718, 646, 917, 347 and 929. All of these area codes can be assigned to both cell phones and landlines.

The original area code for all five boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island) was 212. Then the 212 area code was limited to just Manhattan, and 718 became the new area code for the other four boroughs.

When cell phones came along, 917 was the original cell phone area code for all the five boroughs. However, nowadays, the 917 area code can also be assigned to a Manhattan landline, since 212 numbers are so hard to come by. Additionally, Manhattan cell phones can have the 212 area code as well. I had a friend who had a cell phone with the 212 area code.

The 646 area code was added in 1999 for Manhattan cell phones, however, nowadays it can be assigned to Manhattan landlines as well. Later in 1999, the 347 area code was added for landlines AND cell phones in the other four boroughs.

The 929 area code is the newest one, added in 2011. The 929 code is for landlines and cell phones in the other four boroughs (all but Manhattan).

Additionally, nowadays cell phones from all five boroughs can have the 718 area code.

So basically, a Manhattan cell phone could have the 212, 646, 917 or 718 area code, and Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island and Bronx cell phones could have the 917, 347, 929 or 718 area codes.

New York City area codes Area code 212 and overlay code 646 serve Manhattan.

Area code 718 and overlay codes 347 and 929 serve the other four boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Bronx, and Staten Island).

Area code 917 serves all five boroughs.

The telephone country code for the United States (and Canada and certain Caribbean islands) is +1.

(The plus sign means "insert your international access prefix here." From a GSM mobile phone, you can enter the number in full international format, starting with the plus sign. The most common prefix is 00, but Japan uses 010, Australia uses 0011, and many other countries use different prefixes.)

Until 1984, 212 was the area code for all of New York City. In 1984, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island (but not the Bronx) were split into 718. The Bronx was added into 718 in 1992. There is a small part of the borough of Manhattan that receives telephone service from the Bronx because it is north of the Harlem River; that area, known as Marble Hill, also moved to 718 with the Bronx.

When cell phones started becoming popular, 917 was assigned, originally only for cell phones but later for landlines as well, in all five boroughs. 646 was assigned as an overlay for Manhattan and 347 as an overlay for the other four boroughs. The other four boroughs were also recently assigned the new 929 overlay area code.

So, the area codes are: 212, 718, 917, 646, 347, and 929. But note that cellphones and landlines share the same area codes. Also, sometimes Manhattan residents get a cellphone with one of the area codes that belong to the other boroughs, and vice versa.

The rest of New York state uses various other codes.
At one time, NYC (New York City) had just one AC (Area Code) and that was 212.

Now, Manhattan has area codes 212 and 646.

The other four boroughs (Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Staten Island) use area codes 718, 347, and 929.

Area code 917 is an overlay on all five boroughs.

Either 212, 646, or 917. Occasionally Manhattan cell phones will receive the 718 area code, which is technically one of the area codes for the other four boroughs.

There were no area codes in the 1880s. Area codes were first introduced in 1947; until then, the area code for New York City was, "Operator, connect me to New York City, please."
