The purpose of any town hall meeting - whether online or offline via traditional channels - is to allow a platform for the discussion of issues, ideas and topics that affect, and are of interest to, a certain community. The idea is that members of a community can reach out to the leaders of that community in an informal setting - and have their voices heard.

The reason they are switching to an internet format is that they can have more control of the forum and not allow citizens to display their outrage at the politics of today. Some groups, such as Moveon.org, are paying individuals to go and "flood" town hall meetings with certain opinions that may not represent the majority. Politicians can claim that they are hearing opinions that go against the grain of truth also if the meeting is online rather then in front of people and cameras.

Any politician that wants a online townhall meeting, rather then an honest face to face meeting, should be sommeone you should not trust. Makes no difference which side.
