GHz is most commonly used in computer lingo when discussing a processor's speed. Hz (Hertz) literally means one wave or cycle per second. So 1 GHz (Giga-Hert) is 1 Billion cycles per second. It's a measure of the clock speed of the processor. The more GHz that a computer has, the faster it runs. All things being equal, a machine with a 2 GHz processor will run twice as fast as a machine with a 1 GHz processor.

GHz is an abbreviation for Gigahertz. It represents the rate at which the CPU clock ticks. In this case, Giga, means 1,000,000,000. Which means that a 1GHz processor will have a clock that ticks 1,000,000,000 times per second.

This is related to (But is not a measurement on it's own.) the speed that the processor can process instructions. At every tick of the clock, an instruction moves to the next stage in the pipeline. (All modern processors are pipelined, although number of pipeline stages may vary.)

Your Pentium d processor speed is 2.8 Ghz does that mean you have 2 cores each of 1.4 ghz?

No. Each core runs at 2.8 GHz. Threads can be run on each of the processors at the same time, drastically improving performance in certain situations. It does not mean that the computer is linearly twice as fast though.

How come the iPhone has GB and the other phones have GHZ?

GB means GigaBytes (I Believe its 1 Billion Bytes) which is amount of data its able to store and GHZ (GigaHertz) is processor power, they both have GB and GHZ, they just mean different things about them.

You have 2.8 ghz Intel core 2 duo processor mean that the CPU has 5.6 ghz?

No. A Dual-Core Processor means there are 2 separate cores, each running at 2.8 GHz. The workload is split between the two, giving a combined 5.6 GHz processing power, but they will not work together on the same thing.
