Believe it or not, there was once a time when if someone wasn't at home, there was literally NO WAY to communicate with them without going out and looking for them. And even more amazingly, people somehow managed to live like that.

Actually, there were "mobile phones" before cell phones existed. They were large and heavy and ridiculously expensive both to buy and to use, but for people who absolutely had to be reachable at all times for business reasons, they did exist (they were usually semi-permanently installed in vehicles). There were also pay phones, and if you didn't mind other people listening in, you could use a citizen's band radio (kind of like walkie-talkies, but with more channels) and hope the person you wanted to reach was listening.

The technology before cell phones was the pager: a phone number would connect to a portable radio device carried by a person. Later pagers allowed you to leave a message. The recipient could then use a standard phone to call the messager back.

They didn't annoy me as much. Listening to one half of a shouted conversation on the bus = no fun.

But really, there were pay phones everywhere and we had answering machines instead of voicemail.

Before the cell phone, people used home and pay telephones. There was no texting or any of the other conveniences enjoyed today.
