To unclog a sink, you need to remove the trap. This is part of the drain piping located underneath your sink. Open your cabinet to get access to the bottom of your sink. The pipe may have one or two sections depending on the age of it. Use a wrench or your hand and twist the pipe off at each connection. Note, there is a threaded piece at each junction that you need to loosen. Make sure to put a plastic bucket or pan underneath to catch the water and debris that will come out after you separate the pipes. Once you have removed the trap, look inside to see if food debris or hair have created a blockage. Remove with a straightened clothes hanger or snake. Reassemble the trap and run water to check drainage. If you do not find a clog in the trap, you may want to call a plumber. You may have a clog deeper in your Plumbing.
Look at your plumbing underneath your sink. If plastic you shouldn't need tools. Get a bucket or pot that will fit beneath the plumbing directly under the drain, where you see the U shaped pipe unsrew it. If water is sitting in the pipe below the U shaped pipe your clog could be in your basement. Most times the U shape pipe is where th clog is. If your plumbing is metal you will need a pipe wrench to take the U shaped pipe apart.
I usually try the baking soda and cider vinegar method first.

When a bathroom sink drains too slow it can be frustrating. Many people think that when a sink clogs, a plumber needs to be called. Unclogging a sink can actually be a very simple task and can be done by anyone. Bathroom sinks have to deal with things that other sinks don’t, so they often are the first to get clogged. Sinks can be unclogged in many different ways. Mechanically Unclogging a Bathroom Sink Many people don’t know that plungers are not just for toilets. To use one to unclog a bathroom sink, start by clogging up the little hole on the top of the sink. Place the plunger in the sink and turn on the water until the head of the plunger is covered. Plunge the sink with an up and down motion, as if it were a toilet. Once the sink is unclogged run hot tap water through the pipes to get rid of anything that might still be stuck. A plumber’s snake is another good way to get rid of stubborn clogs. Put the snake into the drain until it hits against the clog. Set the snake and push forward. Repeat this until there is no longer a clog. Then run hot tap water. Other Ways of Unclogging a Sink If a snake is not available and a plunger is not working, there are other ways to unclog a sink. One method is to pour a mixture of one cup salt and one cup baking soda down the sink, followed by a quart of boiling water. This process is then repeated, and will often unclog a sink. However, if the piping is PVC pipe instead of metal piping, pouring boiling water through it might be a bad idea. Use hot water instead. Another method of getting sinks unclogged also involves baking soda. This time, pour a half cup of baking soda down the drain and chase it with a cup of vinegar. Allow this mixture to sit for about thirty minutes. After the thirty minutes is up, pour boiling or hot water down the sink. This should clear up the mess.
