There are tons of sites but it's important to know what kind you're looking for. Facebook and MySpace are good if you want to connect with existing or past friends. Match.com and eHarmony require a paid membership and are for finding romantic relationships. There is also a brand new one out there that's dedicated to meeting brand new friends. It's called Frucle (http://www.frucle.com) and it connects people together based on interests (like the dating sites but for friendship) without charging for memberships, and then it gives you coupons to places that you and your new friends can meet up.

I joined this site called besthottoppics.com It is small, but that is what makes it nice. There are no banner ads and they limit their membership. They have the usual IM, Forums, Games, Chat, Friends ect.... but one of the things that is different is you have your own BHT Tab (My Best Hot Topics). This is where you have your own web pages which is pretty simple to set up. It's a nice clean site plus they ban the jerks & spammers quick! When you first sign up you are given an 'Authorized User' account which has its limitations. I think this is an added protection against spammers & porn as in the text editor you can not link to anything, but I am just guessing. Upon request you will be given an 'Limited User' account which gives you access to everything.
