The air chamber provides a cushion of air that absorbs the shockwaves and reduces the stress on the pipes.

What can one do with a water hammer arrestor?

One would use a water hammer arrestor in their home's water lines to prevent "water hammer" (knocking), which is the noise pipes make when they have no air pockets to absorb the shock of the water stopping suddenly. To prevent pipes for doing this the water hammer arrestor provides the air needed for shock absorption.

What is causing the rattling in the bathroom with the shower?

Water hammer is usually recognized by a banging or thumping in water lines. The noise occurs when the flow of moving water is instantaneously stopped by a closing valve. This sudden stop results in a pressure spike behind the valve which acts like a tiny explosion inside the pipe. This pressure spike will reverberate throughout the plumbing system, rattling and shaking pipes, until it is absorbed. Normally, a sufficient pocket of air will absorb such a pressure spike, but if no pocket of air is present, expensive fixtures and appliances within the plumbing system will be damaged as they are left to absorb this pressure spike.

What is the vibration sound in your pipes after you run water?

When your faucets are off, the water is sitting still. As soon as you open a faucet, water starts flowing out due to the pressure created by your water pump. Whenever you turn the water faucet off, the water supply is cut at the spigot and now all that water that was moving has now stopped, suddenly. Sometimes, when the pressure is too high, it can cause what is called water hammer. Water hammer is when a faucet is turned off, a shockwave is sent through the pipes, vibrating them sometimes throughout the entire house.
