London was 01 until 1990. Local number had seven digits.

In 1990 London was split into two areas (071 - inner London; 081 - outer London).

In 1995 the codes were changed from 071 to 0171, and from 081 to 0181.

In 2000, both of the codes were both changed to 020 and the seven-digit local numbers were changed to eight-digit local numbers.

Numbers in the old 0171 area were changed from xxx xxxx to 7xxx xxxx.

Numbers in the old 0181 area were changed from xxx xxxx to 8xxx xxxx.

All of these numbers had the (020) code from that time on.

In recent times (2005), new numbers started to be issued in the 3xxx xxxx number range.
