I think its just plain dangerous. People get hurt all the time from texting while driving. I heard this one story about a man who was texting on his phone while driving. He looks up after answering a text, and sees he is too late as he crashes into a family walking across the street. He felt horrible and so upset. Turns out, the family wasn't completely together. I believe it was a mom and two kids. The father, i think was either away or at home. When he found out, he was extremely saddened but he did not sue the man. Instead he cared for him and treated him like a long lost friend and acted like it never happened and that the man had never done anything.
I do believe that this story is completely true but i may have exaggerated a little bit of it. This goes to show that texting while driving is bad and very dangerous. But this is just my opinion. I would love to hear other people's thoughts.

I am surprised the driver was not prosecuted - well, you don't say he was. In many countries including the UK, and at least some US states, such behaviour is ILLEGAL - the incident described shows why!

No. Texting while driving is now illegal in many places. The reason for this law is that while you are sending and receiving text messages you are not concentrating on the road and traffic in front of you. While you are not watching the road and traffic you thereby dramatically increase the likelihood of hitting someone or something.

In the States, laws vary on mobile phone usage by state and sometimes even by county. However, it cannot be denied that countless lives are lost every month by people who were distracted by using their mobile phones.
According to the British AA (Automobile Association), that if there are ten-million cars on the road at any given time during the day and the government says one percent of drivers at the wheel are holding a phone: one hundred thousand drivers are breaking the law at that moment. Court convictions prove that phone abuse in vehicles is not a crime committed by a certain class of driver, but is an addiction of the masses.
So many deaths and accidents have occurred due to phone use (texting, and calls), that many governments are now considering treating this crime with the same aggression and sentencing as alcohol and drug violations. Police now routinely check mobile phone records to confirm whether text messages were being sent or checked and whether calls were in progress, either by speaking or listening.
The safest step for everyone is to pull over if you must. Otherwise, wait until you arrive at your destination.
Studies show that drunk driving and texting while driving both have around the same number of wrecks, injuries and deaths, which means they are equally dangerous, and never an okay think to do while driving.
