Mobiles are so popular these days, the technology is also changing at an ever increasing pace, I suppose there must be thousands spent yearly now keeping up to date with the new all dancing mobiles.

This can vary wildly. But the amount can be quite high monthly.

For instance, in the late 1980's I was employed by the second largest cellular provider in the US. I personally reconciled the billing statements for four of our largest clients: a utility company, the state's largest insurance company, and two state universities. Monthly bills ranged then from around $12,000 to over $80,000 per month. While pricing plans have changed since then, the amounts billed by cell-service providers really hasn't changed much.
