a modem is a tool which can change analog sinal to digital signal and vice-versa. when the communication has to take place between the two computers then there is involvement of wires or some wireless technology. if communication exists between then it is through analog signals and computer can accept only digital signal. so,basically modem changes the analog signal to digital when the data is to be received at computer's end and hence it works and facilitates the commmunication between two or more computers.
