The internet consists of a "protocol stack." A protocol is simply a well-defined format for communication. It is called a "protocol stack" because there are many different protocols that are used, each nested inside the other, to communicate. As an example, if you attempt to open a web page, you are requested information from another computer via the HTTP protocol, the Hypertext Transport Protocol. This protocol defines all the ways that one computer can request web pages, images, and other data from another. The HTTP request is nested inside a TCP message, which stands for Transmission Control Protocol. A TCP message contains things like the state that the message is in, the ordering of the message if it is broken up into smaller pieces, and supports retransmission if parts of the overall message is lost. TCP messages are contained in the IP protocol message, which stands for Internet Protocol. IP contains information about the destination computer (its "IP Address"), the originating computer, the ports the message belongs, and the lifespan of the message. The lowest level is the Link layer, which can use a variety of protocols. This layer contains information that gives the unique code that identifies your network hardware (The MAC address).
Nice To hear somebody to fully ask the community how this is done :).

Any information that is to be sent is split into small pieces, called "packets" (IP packets). Each of these packets has a destination address and a source address (the "IP addresses"). Routers on the Internet look at these addresses, and forward the packets according to their IP address; they maintain "routing tables" that tell them where to send packets within certain ranges of addresses.

Satellite internet access works by bouncing internet signals off of satellites as a part of their route to wherever the information is held. Unfortunately due to the distance the signal has to travel it can be slower than a usual wired connection. You can get this type of connection through companies such as Hughesnet.
