Kinow that you can leave at any time.

Just to add to this, that's a dead good answer, you can leave the chatroom at any time when you feel unsafe.
Other points:
-Don't give your real name, don't give your address, or any part of it, your home number, your mobile number, local landmarks, your school/workplace, basically any details: Maybe that sounds overdone but it's easier than you think to build up a big picture of somebody's identity by using the intenet, once they've got your identity things can get dangerous.
-Do report people who you think are dangerous, if the chat site has some way of contacting them then contact them, if you don't then somebody else might end up in trouble with them.
-If you do become friends with somebody and you're sure they're a cool person don't be too trustworthy, pedos will spend years grooming children, adults, anybody they want to, and make you believe they're an awesome, cool person when they're actually not.
-If you want to meet up with anybody you meet in a chatroom then take a trusted adult along with you, meet in a public place, during the day, where there are plenty of people around. This is so that if things go wrong in any way you can get help quick and if that person turns out to be a pedo ect. then they're a lot less likely to harm you when there's loads of people around.

Real friends. They work even better then chat rooms. If you are looking specifically chat rooms, I can't really suggest anything "safe', because finding a chat room strictly for children isn't that easy on the internet.
Online chat on a reputable site like FaceBook is private and safe for children if the person the child is chatting with is a friend or family member. Chat rooms, on the other hand, can be dangerous as pedophiles are known to lurk in chat rooms to catch unsuspecting children.
