There are several free anti-spyware / anti-malware solutions available that are actually as good or better than pay versions. AVG has a good free version available, and surprisingly windows security essentials / defender is a very good free solution for Windows PCs. Although something to do to prevent it in the first place is to avoid the shadier parts of the internet. Also, there are several browser add-ons/extensions that are helpful in this regard. That can block adds and harmful js, tracking cookies, popups, malicious code...
If you clicked a website and a lot of other websites popped up, you did not get hacked. Those are popup ads. You can download software that will block those or you can change the settings in your browser to not allow popups.
Many popup blockers do work, for the most part. Internet browsers that have their own popup blockers keep popups to a minimum. Some unwanted windows do appear from time to time, though.
