Before you reformat your device it is recommended that you back up your phone memory to your MMC data card, or to your computer via file transfer through the PC Suite ( http://www.nokia-Asia.com/A4416567 ). If you can't, or haven't already done this, your user data (contacts, pictures, notes, calendar entries, messages etc. ) and 3rd party applications stored on the internal phone memory may be permanently deleted. One Method to "Reset" the Mobile Device:

A "Simple" Reset will restore the ini files from rom, but should preserve the user data (3rd party applications photos, etc.). To do a simple reset, press *#7780# on your keypad. The screen will phone will prompt you to confirm whether or not you want to reformat the memory (yes, or no). After confirmation you may have to enter a security code, which in most cases is 12345. Please note that user data and If you are able, it is suggested that you back up your phone memorythrough the Nokia PC Suite. *Potential risk: Gallery cagetory menu may be lost. Method to Restore Factory Settings on the Mobile Device:

Restore Original Factory Settings will allow you to restore the phone back to the original Nokia manufacturer phone settings. Use the blue (menu) button on the left to access the menu options. Scroll down to the "Tools" menu. Scroll through to the "Phone Settings" menu. Highlight the "General" tab then (use the left button above the number 1 to) select "Options," then "open". Scroll down to the bottom of the options menu to "Orig. phone settings" then use the options button to 'change' (retore factory settings, or not) the settings. The screen will ask you to confirm your choice after which you will follow all prompts and commands. Restart your phone if necessary.

Reboot your phone in Safe Mode. Your smart phone has a safe mode process that is similar to the safe mode booting process with a personal computer. When starting the device in safe mode, the device boot process will give give priority to the system tasks and will bypass the initialization of 3rd applications to run phone/device. If you expeience problems with powering on the phone (i.e., endless/looping restart process during the startup process, or after the system has loaded) and/or if you can not/do now wish to format the internal memory, you can try to start your device by using the safe mode booting technique. The process is as follows: Press and hold the "ABC (key with pencil icon, located beneath the menu button on the left side), " keep you finger on the button, while you turn on the phone, and continue to depress the button until the system finishes loading and the phone starts. Depending on how critical the device system failure, this process may, or may not work.

If you are having trouble with your phone and need additional troubleshooting assistance, the Nokia website http://www.nokiausa.com/A4410046 advises that you contact your service provider or Nokia Care Center at 1-888-NOKIA-2U (1-888-865-4228). The customer service representative will assist you with first-level trouble shooting then advise you to send the phone to the Nokia repair center to have the phone repaired. For your information, Nokia has only one 'official' repair center in the United States, which is located in Alabama. The Repair center will most likely re-flash your phone. The re-flashing procedure will restore/ repair the original equimpment manufacturer (oem) operating sytems hardware, however as previously stated, your user data and 3rd party applications may be overwritten. If your phone service provider performs the service, you may have the added benefit of receiving additional software and applications that are specificly compatible with your telephone service.
