In the past Facebook users information seeped out in to the real world but now I believe they have got to grips with this. Most of the social networking sites are there to get your information out to friends or business associates or family members, so, there is always some of your information around and about on the information super highway.
A lot of these sites are like rumours, you say something it passes on to one and then another and you only think you are telling people who you know. The search engines love these social media sites, so generally once something is said it tends to go pretty quickly to the higher levels of the search engines search, maybe page one, two or three, so even people who don't know you can track your Tweets, your Facebook rants and worldly observances. By and large, a lot of these companies have got their act together but in most cases it is up to the user of these services to lock down their profiles and information. If you were using Facebook for instance and another user could not see your information it kind of defeats the object of social networking in the first place, there has to be some kind of sharing of data. Even if these companies employ some kind of high-tech wizardry to stop your information getting out into the public eye. It is still up to you yourself to lock up, lock down or just not use these services. A lot of the time they are just full with people trying to make a quick buck, make business associations and get there products maybe a little higher in the searches.

Social networking sites have their own way of maintaining the security features of their site to secure their members. Nowadays a lot of spammers even hackers are there attempting to do their malicious acts on the internet, maybe through some made-up or fictitious accounts that they have and its a must-do of the social networking sites admin to secure the site by having a report button so that anytime that a untoward incident happens, they can have the case reported.
