What network provider are you on?

As far as i am aware, you have to buy yourself out of the contract.

E.G. £30 per month on a 24 month contract, over 24 months you will pay £720.

If you have had 6 months on that contract you will have paid £180. you will have to pay the remainder of the contract, so you would have to pay £540. and then you will be out of the contract.

Is cancelling a mobile phone contract the same as unlocking it and if not what is the difference?

No. Unlocking a phone prepares it for use on a different carrier network. Cancelling a contract just stops your service.

Do you need a contract to get a phone?

No, you don't need a contract. You can get a pre-paid phone which means no contract/monthly phone bill, but it depends what you mean by "getting a phone". If you already have a contract and just need a new phone than u can just buy a phone but you will have to pay full price for it unless you have upgrades. If you're a new client than yes you would either have to sign a contract or you could just get a pre-paid phone.

If you switched to T-mobile and you are not happy with the service or the phone how many days do you have to cancel the contract after it was signed?

Once you sign it, you have to wait out the entire contract before you can cancel it. If you fight it out on the phone, you may be able to get out of the contract if it was less than 30 days since you signed the contract, but you would need to talk to a supervisor - continue up the chain of command and keep asking for supervisors, managers, etc until you get what you want. Typically, they will tell you that cancelling means paying a $200+ cancellation fine so it will take possible an hour on the phone and talking to many different people up the chain of command to get what you want. I got out of one once and it was hard, but be vigilant and you will get what you want.
