At the Master socket itself, there may be a lot of wires all coming into the property together, for the telephone line. However, for todays modern telephone system, only two wires need to be attached to your Master Socket connection. On the back of the Master Socket, you will see two main connections (called A and B).Using the Push down tool used for putting telephone wiring into the right connectors, connect the all white wire to point A, and then connect the all orange wire to point B.Thats it!Dial 17070 to check the connection (if you hear the message on the telephone just hang up, this is showing that you have made the right connection).
If you mean because you're moving house - so long as you're keeping the same number - it shouldn't cost anything. If the hardware (The line, and master socket) are already in place - it's simply a case of an engineer activating the line from the exchange. If you need to get them to install the hardware, you're better off speaking to BT directly on 150.
You can do your own line test by the following:- Unplug any extension phones, extension cables, answer machines or fax (anything except the phone you will use to do the test!).Plug a normal touch tone phone directly into the BT master socket.Dial 17070, press option 2 (quiet line test)You should hear 'Quiet Line Test' and then silence, there should be no pops, clicks, whistles, buzzing etc. If there is noise on the line, make sure it's not your phone's connection to the socket (wiggle it about a bit) and that you are using the master socket. If you are sure its the line making the noise then dial BT and report the fault, they should be able to sort it out.

Yes you have to be a BT broadband or BT mobile customer.
Physically they are identical, all standard UK house phones will plug into either socket. The key difference in how some of the exchange end services are implemented. For example, house phone SMS services may use different protocol and might CLi. It you are using the line as simple phone you should have no trouble with any combination of phone/socket.
BT is Bathtub BT is also Bolt in some cases
