The Blue Waters supercomputer is operated and supported by the NSF or the National Science Foundation, and the university of Illinois. On the 8th of August 2011, IBM terminated their contract to provide hardware for the Blue Waters project and Cray Inc was awarded a $188 million contract to build the supercomputer along with the support of the University.
