What do police dogs wear?

There is no specific color for police internationally, or even nationally. Each department makes their own selection. The color can be anything the department chooses, but they usually select white button ups or darker colors. Tan, brown, darker blues, gray, black, and hunter green are more commonly selected law enforcement colors.

How do police dogs track criminals?

First, they are adopted by the police when they are puppies, then as they grow, they will undergo TRAINING, they will get used to sniffing out drugs, like officers give K-9s different substances of drugs for they to memorize, later they will hide a conceal SAME substance in a Car, if the dog sniff it out, most likely they will stop or bark. Like missing persons, dogs are used to sniff the children's clothing from where they disappear, because they were trained to do that. Hope This Helps :)

How many years in jail can you get from killing a police dog?

If the police dog were just a dog, you could serve at least 4 years for animal cruelty. Since a police K9 is actually a badged police agent, you would be guilty of destroying government property, and causing the death of a police agent, and would likely serve life in prison.

Addendum:

Related to this, while I served in the Army in Germany in 1984, it was common for the Military Police (MPs), to bring drug dogs through the units. The MPs would arrive with their dogs, clear the unit, and while we stood in formation outside, walk the dogs from room to room. It was common for service members (SMs) who were holding illegal drugs to drop different substances on the floor on their way out the door; ground coffee was the most common and seemed to be the most effective. On one occasion, a soldier from a different platoon than mine took the extra step of adding rat poison to the grounds, hoping it would make the dog ill and be even more effective. It had an affect.

As the dog entered the unit, as always, his nose went immediately to the floor. He must have huffed in a huge amount, because he made it about three more steps into the unit and collapsed in seizures. The MP was frantic. He scooped up the dog and ran for the medic station in the building across the street from our unit. The dog died, I suspect, on the way across the street.

The investigation was quick and the SM was identified. He was arrested and charged with murder. You see? the dog was a service member, actually holding the rank of corporal. The SM was court marshaled and convicted. He was quickly sentenced, and is still serving his sentence at Leavenworth Kansas...natural life.

What makes a good police dog?

To be chosen for the squad, they must meet very specific criteria in terms of both physical attributes and behavioral qualities.

Required qualities

To join the squad, the dogs must demonstrate very good physical and behavioral skills, such as:

  • Perfect health
  • Agility
  • Attraction to humans and sociability
  • Courage, strength and determination
  • Instinct for predation, play and hunting

Breeds

General purpose dogs must be able to perform in a number of completely different disciplines, summer and winter alike. German shepherds and Belgian Malinois shepherds are breeds that have this diversity.

Size and gender

The chosen dogs may be male or female and are generally between 25 and 35 kg.

Age

Whenever possible the dogs are brought into the service between the ages of 8 and 12 weeks, but the unit often gets dogs that are older or even full grown.

The dogs become operational at an average age of 2 or 3 years and generally work for 5 to 7 years.

They take a well-earned retirement around the age of 7 to 9.

Can k9 narcotic unit smell small amounts of drugs?

If the drugs are in a concealed bag/envelope on the Suspect, then it is safe, But if, Lets say you raid a drug-house and cocaine are sitting on a table uncovered by anything, and the K-9 starts sniffing it, then we wouldn't know, because scientists never did drug testing on any domestic animals. But most of the time SWAT/Police would NEVER use dogs in a RAID, sometimes just after the raid to chase the suspects.

Police dogs are well trained to smell or find anything which are not good for the society. They are very helpful to the policemen by finding thieves or detecting bombs. How does a police K9 become trained?

i don't know but i need this answer too so please somebody with knowledge answer this question!
Go to college and get a degree in animal behavior to make yourself more marketable. Apprentice with a police dog trainer to learn more dog training skills and the specific requirements of police dog training.

If your local police department has a K-9 unit, they can refer you to the trainer they use. Perhaps you can volunteer to clean the kennels in exchange for learning.

Will a class A misdemeanor hurt your chance of becoming a police officer?

Yes, depending on the severity of the misdemeanor and what it involves. I also believe you must be cleared of any felonies for over a number of years.

It's better to contact the person in charge as it can vary.

What happens if a police dog dies?

Killing or harming a police dog is a crime.

A police dog is considered a police officer, despite not being human. Therefore by harming a police dog you are effectively harming a police officer in the eyes of the law.

Police dogs are also very expensive to train and maintain. So not only would you be harming a police asset but you would also be angering the national treasury and taxpayers for wasting their money.

Kicking or punching a police dog is a crime, unless the dog attacked for no reason, then it is self defence and acceptable. Otherwise you'll be jailed for harming the police dog.

Killing a police dog, unless in self defence (except where the dog was set upon you by police) will also result in jail.

How many police dogs are there in the uk?

It's impossible to say. German Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Doberman Pinschers and Rottweilers are the most commonly used.
There are many different breeds, and even some 'mutts' used in law enforcement work. German and Belgian Shepherds are probably the most familiar type associated with police work, but, there are many other breeds represented. Bloodhounds - Rottweilers - Beagles - Retrievers - almost any breed that has a particularly specialized talent that is associated with that particular breed (e.g.- smell - tracking - etc.) can, and will, be utilized.

Do police dogs live with their handler?

No, they belong to the department. The handlers usually do purchase the dogs from the police department when they are retired though.

Why are pitbulls used as police dogs?

to be honest, with good training, any dog can do something in the police force .

Disagree. A pit bull is classified under the Dangerous Dogs Act. It would have to be muzzled and therefore restricts any ability to detain a fleeing suspect. It has no special qualities re scent operations.

No police force would use pit bulls out of choice and I know of none that do.

Similarly no forces would use poodles, Yorkshire terriers, great danes, old English sheepdogs etc.

Engage brain before answering please.

Typical dogs are German Shepherds for control and spaniels for scent work. Others are used but they must have similar qualities to above to ensure successful results and public safety.

What qualifications do you need to be in the k-9 unit?

No special subject(s). You must first be able to qualify and be hired as a police officer. If chosen for canine duty, you will be trained along with your dog at a special training school.
