What are the rules in the dressage?
Each type of show has its own dress code, based on both discipline and level of show.
If showing at a "fun show" or in a non-competitive atmosphere, you can probably wear whatever you want. Because you are showing off your accomplishments, you want to look clean and professional. As a general rule:
- English disciplines: tan breeches, neutral coloured polo shirt tucked in, black belt, black boots, black helmet, black gloves
- Western disciplines: jeans, boots with a heel, western shirt, cowboy hat or helmet
For western, you can continue to wear the described above through the higher levels, though chaps may be desired. Go to a few shows before your show date to see what's in style.
If you are showing at any level besides the lowest, grass-roots level, the dress code is more formal for english disciplines. Though styles come and go, this is the norm right now on the show circuit:
- Hunters: black helmet with hair in hairnet and put up in helmet, white show shirt tucked in, black/navy/grey show jacket with 3 buttons, tan knee patch breeches, black belt, black tall boots (or paddock boots and jodhpur straps if you're under 12 years old), black gloves
- Jumpers: conservatively coloured helmet, white show shirt, black/navy/grey show jacket with 3 or 4 buttons, tan knee patch breeches (white in special classes only), belt, brown/black tall boots, gloves
- Dressage: black helmet (or top hat at higher levels) with hair in a hairnet in a braided bun, white show shirt, black show jacket, black or white gloves, white breeches, black boots
No matter what level or discipline, the emphasis is on clean and tidy everything. Spend the extra hour cleaning everything before hand and make sure everything is well fitting.

Australian quarantine rules were too strict at the time to allow the horses into the country so the equestrian events were held in Stockholm, Sweden in June, five months before the rest of the Games.
They're called fly nets, and their purpose is to keep insects out of the horse's ears. Show horses often have the hair inside their ears clipped for appearance, but this allows insects to enter and distract the horse. A horse usually shown in an insect free area may have to wear a fly net when shown in an area that has insects since it will take time for the hair to grow back.
I have also heard that they are sometimes used for the sound. Yes they are called flyn nets, however if the horses ears are stufffed with cotton wool or ear plugs (as some horses are sensitive to sound and put off by clapping,speakers etc) then these provide a smart way of covering the fulffy cotton wool. As you can imagine in something the size of the Olympics you wouldn't want your horse not concentrating. Hope this helps.
