Carpet is installed in homes for 4 reasons:

1 Cheaper

2 Better support in case of accidents or falls

3 Warmth, keeps the home warmer than tile/wood/vinyl etc.

4 Less slippery than all others when wet

I would imagine it would be to keep your feet warm before people had worked out heating but they kept it because it's nicer to walk on then wood although I am not sure.
