Biltmore Estate, Asheville, North Carolina is and has always been considered the most expensive "house" in America. Built in 1895 on 125,000 acres of land, the 175,000 square-foot residence alone is valued at between $200 million and $350 million. When considering the value of the land it is situated on, the property is valued at close to $1.2 billion.
Quantifying the most expensive house/home in the U.S. is problematic. There are several houses that are valued in excess of $100 million. The White House could be worth as much, but it would be like putting a price on the Lincoln Memorial. Also, most of the value that would go into pricing the White House relates to peripherals - such as all of the high-tech equipment that is installed for security, communications and things that have nothing to do with the residence. As for the private real estate, some are priced vey high because they are situated on hundreds of acres of prime real estate.
Having said all of that, a recent quote puts the value of the White House at more than $250 million. You would be challenged to find a private residence valued as much.
