The large population in cities created a need for other land to be developed for housing. This led to the development of outlying areas next to bigger cities called suburbs. It also created the need for wider roads through the cities.
Racial tensions in cities rose. The tax base of many large cities eroded Inner cities were revitalized by artists' loft Public housing projects became more common.

Rapid urban growth brought problems. Not enough housing existed for all the newcomers. Greedy landlords profited from the housing shortage by squeezing large apartment buildings onto small lots. There was not much sunlight and air. Their outdoor toilets overflowed, which spread disease. Crime flourished abundantly. There were also a lot of food shortages.
