Durkheim claimed that as societies evolve over time, mechanical solidarity (based on shared beliefs and values) gives way to organic solidarity (based on interdependence and specialization). This shift is driven by the increasing complexity and division of labor within societies.
In horticultural societies, division of labor typically involves men and women having distinct roles. Men may focus on clearing land, hunting, and building while women are more involved in planting crops, tending to gardens, and food preparation. This division of labor helps ensure the community's survival by efficiently utilizing resources and knowledge.
Sociology studies human society and social behavior in the present, focusing on social interactions, institutions, and structures. History, on the other hand, examines past events and their impact on societies, cultures, and individuals. Sociology seeks to understand the patterns and dynamics of contemporary societies, while history explores the evolution and development of societies over time.
The French sociologist Γmile Durkheim argued in his book "The Division of Labor in Society" that societies evolve from a state of mechanical solidarity, characterized by a strong collective conscience and similarities among individuals, to organic solidarity, where individuals are interdependent and specialized in various social roles. This transition is driven by the increasing division of labor in more complex societies.
