Social class is at least a component of social structure. That is, all society has some kind of structure to it, and class may or may not be one of the structures. Class is a sorting mechanism, connected to the way resources are shared and distirbuted- people of higher social class are born with more access to wealth and food and prestige than someone of a lower class. This makes the structure of society more stable and predictable over time.

Marxist theorists would argue that class is ALWAYS a part of how society is organized, as there are always some individuals with more access to resources and prestige than others. Not everyone would agree with this, though. Some anthropologists have pointed out the important difference between power that is inherited from one generation to the next, and influence that is only created during your lifetime by your own deeds, and dies with you. If class is defined as something that gets passed down persistently through the generations, than it has not always existed; that was a specific idea that cropped up at a specific (though unknown) moment in history. The same is not true of social structure as a whole, which predates even the evolution of our species.
