The term ("sociologie") was first coined by the French essayist Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès (1748-1836). (from the Latin: socius, "companion"; and the suffix -ology, "the study of", from Greek λόγος, lógos, "knowledge". The term was independently re-invented, and introduced as a neologism, by the French thinker Auguste Comte (1798-1857) in 1838.
