The fact that most ex-slaves were easily distinguished from whites made racism simple to practice, as was the segregation that followed in its place.
The Ku Klux Klan was formed as a terrorist group aimed at attacking and intimidating Blacks so that they would not pursue their voting rights and white supremacy would continue to rule the south. Lynching was the most popular form of killing for the Klan because it enabled them to leave the body hanging from the tree to serve as a warning.
The KKK killed people (especially African Americans and Republicans) to create fear and intimidate people. The goal was to maintain white supremacy and to maintain one party rule in the South, which subsequently lasted for about 100 years.
