Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (commonly called the "Mormon" church) faced extreme persecution throughout the east coast and Midwest. The controversy, persecution, and violence that seemed to follow them everywhere led to government officials forcing them out of Missouri and Illinois. In search of a place where they could practice their religion in peace, Mormons eventually decided it would be best to leave the United States (at the time most of the west was Mexico) and live in an area where others didn't want to be (some explorers and fur trappers had declared the place uninhabitable).

The federal government under President Polk refused to protect the Mormons and Mobs & terrorist's burned their homes and forced them to flee for their lives from the state of Illinois. Just because the Mormons had some different religious beliefs than their Christian neighbors.
