The Usher of the Black Rod executes the orders of the Senate of Canada, and acts as a messenger of the Governor General of Canada (as a representative of Her Majesty the Queen). The Usher of the Black Rod is also responsible for maintaining the security of the Senate chamber, and may detain persons who disrupt the proceedings of the Upper House. Commonly referred to as simply "Black Rod", the Black Rod is best known for the role that he or she plays at the opening of a new session of the legislature. When the Governor General arrives at the Senate to read the throne speech, the Speaker of the Senate orders the Black Rod to summon the House of Commons. As the Black Rod approaches the Lower House, the doors are shut and the Black Rod is forced to knock and ask for entrance; this act is symbolic of the authority of the House of Commons to control its own proceedings even in the presence of the Queen's messengers. The Usher of the Black Rod is named for the ebony rod that symbolises its office.
