Living things or "organisms" adapt to their environment in order to survive. Natural selection is one of the mechanisms of evolution and organisms that are the fittest will produce more viable offspring and their genotype will be carried on. The only mechanism that allows organisms to physically and genetically "change" is mutation. This occurs over long periods of time (eg: millions of years) and if the mutation makes the organism stronger and better than the new gene will remain present in the gene pool.
