Math is cumulative, so its important that young students really understand adding/fractions and later on algebra/functions before then can begin to grasp higher level stuff. The better you know the basics the easier it is in high school. Comfort with numeracy is important for most technical jobs so there is also that. Also math helps build "analytical thinking skills".
